Blacklight Sessions present: Best in Dubstep

Posted in Uncategorized on August 26th, 2011 by Kris.G

I’ve never been a big supporter of dubstep as it often doesn’t tickle my fancy too much, yet the other night I found myself listening to a full 42 minute mix of dubstep presented by DJ Panic City and DJ Megaman. And… I didn’t hate it! Actually rather enjoyed what I heard in this particular mix. Being Panic City is no stranger to BTV, I thought I may as well stick with the trend and post this as well. Take a listen, even if you don’t like dubstep.

Yeah, this is a short post but it’s also like number 8 or 9 for the day so I’m running out of gas. Not content, just gas.

Really? We’re the same age?

Posted in Uncategorized on August 26th, 2011 by Kris.G

So I just got done telling you how much I love Childish Gambino in my last post. Well, I made a Pandora station based on CG and heard some Gilbere Forte. Being a blogger, this is a name that always shows up on blogs and HypeM, but I never really listened to him before. Well on the first beat, I was hooked. He samples the 1987 live version of Run DMC’s “Here We Go.” I recognized it immediately and was ready to go. And damn Forte went. Went HAM on that track start to finish. When you’re dropping some live Run DMC it’s pretty much awesome from Forte to LMFAO.

Then it got me thinking: Wait a second. Born in 87? Yeah, me too… so we’re the same age and this is what your doing with your life already? What am I doing?

Anyway, check out some more of Gilbere Forte here.

Oh, and to answer my questions from above: teaching and making a difference.

The Last Royals – Crystal Vases

Posted in Uncategorized on July 1st, 2011 by Kris.G

So back in the early February is when this track was first sent to me. Unfortunately, it was sent to me during one of my inactive periods on BTV. But I do remember that the same week I received it in my inbox was the same week I heard it on XM. And quite honestly, I really really like it. I just feel so bad that it took me so long to promote.

The Last Royals are a group out of Brooklyn and have been on XM’s Alt Nation so much recently. They’re a fairly new band and I can’t wait to see what they’ll be putting out on their first album slated for an August 2011 release from Ooh La La Recordings.

Make sure to check out their other music including two covers they’ve releases too: Nothing Compares 2 U  by Prince (yes, Prince. Not Sinead O’ Connor) and Unbelievable by EMF.

Buy Crystal Vases on iTunes here or get the entire EP here.

Plan B – Stay Too Long

Posted in Uncategorized on May 8th, 2011 by Kris.G

So last night I got to see the Hooligans in Wondaland Tour with Bruno Mars and Janelle, and, quite honestly, it was a good show. But opening for them was a guy called “Brad B,” or at least that’s what I thought I heard him say last night. He had a beatboxer do his introduction and then they performed a cover medley remixed with beatboxing. The final song of Brad B’s set was one I recognized and could sing with but couldn’t place who the original artist was.

So I did some searching online today and realized it wasn’t Brad B at all who opened. It was Plan B, the British rapper, singer-songwriter, actor and film director. And then it hit me. The original artist of the closing song was Plan B. It wasn’t a cover. It was all just a misunderstanding. Excellent set though. Oh, and the beatboxer who performed with him was FaithSFX. He was one of the best beatboxers I have ever seen.

Anyway, here’s Plan B’s “Stay Too Long,” the song I knew without knowing it was Plan B…

Eklips – A Beatbox History of Hip-Hop

Posted in Uncategorized on May 7th, 2011 by Kris.G

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for beatboxers ever since I came across Rahzel many years ago. And by many years, I’m talking back in the Napster days. Now last night, I just came across this video of a French beatboxer, Eklips, doing a history of hip hop songs — all beatboxed.

It’s so cool to listen to. Criticize his actually beatboxing if you wish but, conceptually, I was blown away. Between his use of noise and voice couple with an extensive song-list, it was just a fun video to watch. Bonus points for whoever can name all the songs.

Turns out this was actually recorded as a commercial as you’ll see at the end of the Youtube video below, but nonetheless, it’s done in one take and is impressive.

Two for Tuesday?

Posted in Uncategorized on May 3rd, 2011 by Kris.G

Saul Williams released his new album yesterday. (On a Monday? Ok, Saul.) He was going to be the subject of my post today but, unfortunately, I have been crazy busy this past week and have not listened to any of the new album. Expect a two-fer with Saul’s new stuff later this week.

Until then, here’s this:

Hugh Laurie (as House) – Get Happy

Posted in Uncategorized on April 18th, 2011 by Kris.G

Damn, I already broke my posting streak. I actually had stuff I wanted to post this weekend. I just went away for a few days and got too busy to get near a computer to post. So let’s start off this week with something happy and keep it up from there.

A few weeks back on Fox’s House, Hugh Laurie sang Judy Garland’s “Get Happy.” I really enjoyed his rendition of it and here it is for you. Just seems like a good way to start the week. Plus House is new tonight and as of last week 13 is back so it’s all good! O yeah, and the video of the performance is below.

Rusted Root – Send Me On My Way

Posted in Uncategorized on March 21st, 2011 by Kris.G

So yesterday was the first day of Spring I’m told… Friday was beautiful and 82 degrees. Then the temperature slowly dropped over the weekend, there was some freezing rain on my windshield this morning, and temperature read 38 degrees. So it’s not feeling too much like Spring right now. But that’s ok, I’m still going to celebrate it’s official arrival.

I remember back during my freshman year of college, I noticed my listening habits changed as the weather warmed up and it’d definitely done that a little this year too. Just like beer has a rhythm of the seasons, I think music does too. So here’s one of the great up lifting that I love when I can drive with my windows down in the warm weather.

I would like to reach out my hand
I may see you
I may tell you to run
You know what they say about the young

Motion City Soundtrack – Capital H

Posted in Uncategorized on March 13th, 2011 by Kris.G

It’s already past 9PM EST on Sunday and I have not yet posted anything. It’s not that I’ve forgotten or been too busy. It’s just that I’m unmotivated and uninspired. I’ve been searching the internet and nothing is hitting me. When it comes to this, I have to take a step back and really think about why I started this blog. It’s a hobby and a way to express myself with song a day. Whatever I’m feeling. I’m not a “BRAND NEW CHECK OUT THIS TRACK ITS SO GOOD OMG” type blogger. It’s just for me and if someone else reads it, thanks.

So what have I been listening to this weekend? That’s a good place to start. Motion City Soundtrack. Don’t know why. Saw a playlist of theirs I made in iTunes and have listened to it 3-4 times weekend. So it just seems appropriate that I stick with my roots and post just what I feel. So here’s MCS’ not so well known “Capital H.” It’s off the 2003 Epitaph release of their first album, I Am The Movie.

A hero zero with a capital Z (that’s me)
Singing songs from the balcony as the city crumbles
Under the powers of an evil doctor rocket science monster
with capabilities to destroy the entire universe

Motion City Soundtrack – Capital H [YSI]

P.S. – The picture with this post is not mine. Wish it was.

My Little Cheap Dictaphone – My Holy Grail

Posted in Uncategorized on February 21st, 2011 by Kris.G

Sometimes when songs like this end up in my inbox, it’s inspiring and deflating all at the same time. It’s great to know that there are really talented artists in the world don’t just make what sells, but at the same time, it sucks that I’ve never even heard of them.

My Little Cheap Dictaphone was in my inbox today and this is what it said about these guys: A vibrant rush of Arcade Fire -style dynamics that grabs you immediately. A terrific album.

From what I’ve heard, I’d agree. Enjoy.
