Brenton Duvall – Against a Mad World (Tupac vs. Gary Jules)

Posted in mashup on August 30th, 2010 by Kris.G

I love the cover of “Mad World” by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules that was used in Donnie Darko. And mashing it with Tupac’s “Me Against The World” made for a hauntingly accurate feeling that each song should be emitting. Oh man, what would viewers have done if it ended up being Tupac inside the Frank the Bunny suit?

Check out some more of Brenton Duvall’s mashup work on his Soundcloud.

Mochi Beats – Forever Impossible

Posted in mashup on August 23rd, 2010 by Kris.G

I really should just start calling these “Mochi Mondays” because week after week, he tears it up! I had this little beauty waiting for me in my Soundcloud yesterday evening and couldn’t wait to get it posted today. I was instantly drawn in by Two Door Cinema Club. And although I don’t like Drake, he fit in really well in the middle of this song. After a little Shontelle, the choice to go back to TDCC and end with them won me over for sure.

As always, check out Mochi Beat’s Soundcloud for some other great mashups. O yeah, and today’s picture was created Mochi Beats just for the song.

Mochi Beats – Tipsy Boy

Posted in mashup on August 11th, 2010 by Kris.G

There aren’t many artists that I feature repeatedly but Mochi Beats is definitely one that I do. Often you hear it’s either quality or quantity and a happy medium is hard to come by. Somehow Mochi has done it. He’s been putting out 2-4 mash ups a month consistently and they’ve all been of a pretty good quality. Today’s song is no different. I can only hope that Mochi’s names eventually becomes synonymous to other great mashup artists from The White Panda to Girl Talk to Party Ben.

P.S. – Because one of the songs I posted yesterday didn’t show up on HypeM, make sure to check out Mike Posner’s new stuff here .

Friday is for… Partying | DJ Deebin

Posted in friday is for, mashup on August 6th, 2010 by Kris.G

Wow, I’ve posted a lot of mashups this week. And I don’t care at all. This is another one of those mashes that blurs the line between mashup and DJ set. I don’t care what you want to call it. I just want you to go out and have a good time and shake ya ass; watch ya self. Deebin put together over a 4 and half minutes of a solid bass pumping mix that I’d be more than happy to hear in a club. And it’s not just another excerpt from something longer. It’s got its own solid rise and fall. For me it gets really good around 1:20. Check out more of his work on Soundcloud.

O whatever to all this music talk mumbo jumbo. Feel it. Move it. Go out and have a good time on this Friday night! I know I am.

On The Rise – The Mix, Vol 1

Posted in mashup on August 4th, 2010 by Kris.G

At what point does mashup become a DJ set instead of a mashup? Sometimes in this world of music, the lines become so blurred when describing what a piece of music is. On The Rise have certainly done that. Two guys out of Bucknell who have started toying with the mashup genre have released a number of songs on their Soundcloud. Now how do I describe today’s post by these guys? Well it’s not quite a Girl Talk style mashup that overlays tons and tons of short samples. And it’s not really a DJ set as the backing track is often different than the vocals. I guess I’d best describe this as a DJ set of mashups. On The Rise often does not use more than 2 samples at any one time so it almost seems like they have strung together a bunch of other mashed they have made.

Do I like the set? It certainly has highs and low for me. I love hearing the hiphop over artists like Jack’s Mannequin because it’s something that doesn’t occur often. However, I don’t know if the overall feel has great rise and fall for me personally. Take a listen and you decide.

O yeah and theres a bonus below by these guys too. It’s Eminem doing his flow over Michael Jackson and works really well. I dig it.

Mochi Beats – Lying Hearts

Posted in mashup on August 2nd, 2010 by Kris.G

You know there are tons of mashups out there. Some good, some not. Some artists use only two songs or artists per mashup (e.g. Dangermouse and The Grey Album) or those that use dozens of samples per song (e.g. Girl Talk). Well Mochi Beats is no stranger to this blog. I dig his work as much as Girl Talk’s and, more importantly, he consistently keeps in contact with me. It’s not just about trying to get his work promoted, but actually making a professional relationship with those doing the promoting.

Anyway, Mochi Beats drops another sick one. Solid intro and upbeat throughout. One thing I love about this mashup is that I don’t know any samples in it. I know that sounds strange, but when I can hear the familiarity of Kanye spitting the opening lines over top of some indie rock and it sounds like it belongs, I dig it! If you’re interested in more work by Mochi Beats, check out his site and Soundcloud. Also keep an eye on Bridging The Verse as well as Sunset in the Rearview. Both of us feature Mochi Beats regularly.

P.S. – Sorry to any regular readers (I like to pretend I have them) about this weekend. I got so busy that I just couldn’t post. Plus I was exhausted when I was home.

Mochi Beats – Say It’s Empathy (Crystal Castles + Rihanna + Lupe Fiasco + Terra Naomi)

Posted in mashup on July 5th, 2010 by Kris.G

Another solid one from Mochi Beats! I’ll be serious. Anyone that mashes a song with Lupe in it has pretty much won me over instantly. But to juxtapose him with an (assumably) indie rock singer whom I’ve never heard before (Terra Naomi), it added even more depth to the song and I dug it. I even liked Rihanna’s intro. It was a solid way to bring Lupe into it and really drop the beat. However, I do have to say I was not feeling the Crystal Castle’s Empathy backing music with its repetitive techno “do do dos.” This is particularly true in the Rihanna intro. It was just too piercing for my personal taste. It’s not that I don’t like that song; it was what primarily drew me to Skratch Bastid’s mash, but I just wasn’t feeling it in this particular mashup. This mashup includes Crystal Castles “Empathy”, Rihanna “Love the way you lie”, Lupe Fiasco “Slow down”, and Terra Naomi “Say it’s possible.”

Friday is for… Mashups | Misc

Posted in friday is for, mashup on June 18th, 2010 by Kris.G

Alright e’rybody. I decided to make a couple selections of mashups that I’ve found throughout the week. So here are three mashups for you for the weekend. Don’t know if I’ll get around to a post tomorrow because I’m going away for the weekend so just enjoy these instead.

First mashup is from DJZJ and was sent to me on soundcloud. It mashes Mike Posner and Flo Rida. It’s got a decent build and beat and I enjoy having it on in the background.

DJZJ – Rounder Than Me (Mike Posner vs. Flo Rida) [YSI]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Next up is one of favorite new mashup artists, Mochi Beats. I was talking to him about this mashup and said that I was kinda done with Gaga but there are still plenty of people out there who love her so I’m giving it a chance. Not to mention, it’s a nice use of Lauper and the Three 6 Mafia. You need to check out more of his stuff.

Mochi Beats – Time after Romance (Lady Gaga + Cyndi Lauper + Three 6 Mafia) [YSI]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Finally is one I found on Pigeons and Planes and I really dug it (apparently so did you based on HypeM performance). There’s something about Andre 3000′s voice that always draws me in. O yeah and it’s a fun mash as a whole. This one is from Skratch Bastid.

Crystal Castles & Outkast & Raekwon – Skewed Empathy (Skratch Bastid Mix) [YSI]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Mochi Beats – “Gifted Stop” (Glee + N.A.S.A. + Kanye West + Sia + Santigold + Paula Deanda + Kylie Minogue)

Posted in mashup on May 24th, 2010 by Kris.G

So this was just sent to me. I am digging the overall sound of it but I think it needs to be longer, especially when featuring that many artists. Also, I’m not sure it quite reaches a climax, just a constant upbeat wall of sound. It’d be great for a dance party, though. I’m not dissing the song because I do like it overall. I have a feeling listening to the mashup album as a whole may be a better experience than individual songs. Check out Mochi Beats here and listen to more of the mashups on Soundcloud here.
