A day of power posting: Music Websites

Posted in mashup, special on August 26th, 2011 by Kris.G

Well I’ve MIA for the most part over the past couple months. I hope I can make up for it in one day. I’m gonna try to pound out a number of posts today. I’ve got a piece of paper filled with possibilities. Anyway, tomorrow’s my birthday so consider this my gift to you guys. Here we go.

Post #1 for the day of power posting:

So in my months of absence, I’ve come across some pretty cool music websites. Not blogs, but other unique things. You may have seen them before or you may not have, but hopefully here’s my chance to introduce you to something cool.

First up: Rap Genius

As the growing number of hip hop artists become more and more witty with their lyrics, it sometimes gets harder and harder to follow along. Personally I love the challenge of trying to figure out the metaphor or wordplay. Sometimes I love even more when I get it and no one else does… Luckily for us internet geeks (sorry if by saying “us” I offend you as a reader), there’s Rap Genius, a website dedicated to breaking down the meaning line-by-line of those hip hop songs out there.

One person that this is great for is Childish Gambino. Let’s put it this way: I f***ing love Childish Gambino and can’t wait for his LP to drop now that he’s signed a label. But anyway! Gambino is super witty. He knows his cultural references and puns and can even catch me off guard. I mean like this song:

Childish Gambino – Not Going Back [YSI]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I mean these lines make me laugh everytime:

Black dudes assume I’m closeted or kinda gay
White people confused like girl on Glee and Gabourey

I was originally going to write this post with all the lyrics but I figured I’d let Rap Genius take of that. Check it here and the rest of Childish Gambino stuff here. Oh, did I mention that Donald Glover (AKA Childish Gambino) is a regular contributor on Rap Genius? Meaning what? All his lyrics are explained 100% and done to Donald’s standards.

Enough of that. Taking a step in a different direction.

Second Site: Mashup Breakdown

Since my main man Mochi Beats has left the world of music and, more specifically mash ups, I had to find someone else. I think I might have a possible candidate in the way of The Abrahammer. I’ve heard some of his stuff and I’m digging it. He’s recently released a new mashup album called “How Dubstep Music Destroyed My Life.” Oh yeah, it’s got nothing to do with dubstep but a whole lot to do with the next site I’m telling you about: Mashup Breakdown.

So I think mashups are a really cool genre of the modern music world because they often boggle my mind. I’m a really visual person and the perfect blending of sound is something I just couldn’t do on my own. Thankfully, I can now SEE what is going on (image below). Mashup Breakdown takes a mashup from Girl Talk to The Abrahammer and SHOWS it to you.

You know what? My words aren’t a good description. Go check it out here with this song:

Mochi Beats’ New Things

Posted in mashup on June 29th, 2011 by Kris.G

Ok, so it’s been a rough month or so and doesn’t appear to be instantly better in the weeks to follow, so considering BTV is only a hobby of mine, it certainly got put on the back burner. I’m not saying I’ll be posting at any regular interval for the time being, but I’ll try to get some things out there when I can.

First post today is all about my man Mochi Beats. I’ve always been his go-to for releasing new things but this time I knew he would have to release elsewhere. And good thing he did cause this first track got to #1 on HypeM, unsurprisingly. Taking 14 tracks and mashing them into one awesome club song is no small feat, yet Mochi Beats keeps on cranking out stuff I want to more and more DJs in clubs to play.

Did I mention he mashes his own sick videos for his work now too? Move over Earworm! And anyone who uses an entire verse from Luda-man in their song is already tops in my book.

But that’s not all the Mochi Beats I’m giving you today! Mochi Beats doesn’t just take a huge assortment of songs and mash em Girl Talk style. He also takes two simple songs, adds some original production, and puts out songs as sick as anything else. Here’s one with Biggie and Dolly Parton. Wait, what? Did I type that right? Yeah. It’s Biggie and Dolly! And with Mochi Beats’ production backing it, it’s as club-worthy as anything else I’ve heard out there.

Mochi Beats, keep em coming! Sorry I wasn’t first to post these, but damn I’ll be there to support your work as much as I can.

Mochi Beats – Friends Till The End

Posted in mashup, new release on May 2nd, 2011 by Kris.G

Fresh off the press! Brand new Mochi Beats. And when I say “brand new,” I mean that in more than one way. Mochi Beats has been releasing excellent mashups for some time now and has mixed tons of artists together on his mixtapes and EPs. This time, however, he’s mashing those tons of artists onto one song. Taking an approach similar to DJ Earworm or Norwegian Recycling, Mochi Beats has made this track chock-full of artists with 15 different tracks.

I can’t say for sure, but I think Mochi Beats had a very solid message to pass with this track. “I’m here and I’m good.” After a negative comment about his work back in April, Mochi Beats is showing that what he does is “more difficult then cutting and pasting in ableton live.” It takes an ear-an ear that Mochi Beats has proven that he has time and time again.

It’s great to hear this style of mashup come out of Mochi Beats just to hear how he compares to the other mashup artists that always pop up out there. And dare I say, “Move over Earworm, Mochi Beat’s is coming through.” ? I do have to make one recommendation when listening to this, though: Turn it up. Loud!

Did I mention Mochi Beats made his own video for this too?

Heems x Katy Perry – Teenage Dream

Posted in mashup on April 27th, 2011 by Kris.G

Apparently this song came out in January, but today was the first day I came across it. Happened to see a friend post it on Facebook and decided it was good enough to post. I’ve posted both Das Racist and Katy Perry in the past so it’s time to combine them into one world.

Heems from Das Racist takes Teenage Dream and slows it into a weird Teenage Nightmare. Then throws some of his lyrical styling on top as a finishing touch. It’s got a neat sound and is enjoyable enough. Take a listen.

Mochi Beats – Blessed Bass

Posted in mashup, new release on April 11th, 2011 by Kris.G

I’ve been a big supporter of Mochi Beats’ work for some time now and he continues to impress me. His latest track features Big Boi and Nicki Minaj on the vocals, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for me personally. I’ve been listening to a lot of Outkast this past week so as soon as I saw Big Boi’s name, I was ready to listen to this.

And I wasn’t disappointed. I may go so far to say that this track gave me the same enjoyment as the first ever Mochi Beats track I heard over a year ago. If I had to give one negative critique, it would be that I didn’t want it to stop. I’m not saying it stopped abruptly. I’m saying the fact that it stops at all is where the disappointment comes from. I wanted to listen to this track forever.

Check out all my Mochi Beats’ posts here.

Friday is for… Remixes | Mochi Beats

Posted in friday is for, mashup, remix on March 11th, 2011 by Kris.G

Bridging The Verse is no stranger to the music of Mochi Beats. From posting quite a few of his mashups to co-hosting the contest for Mochi Beat’s last EP, I’ve heard my fair share of his work. Now, I get to hear something new. Although still staying true to his mashup roots, this definitely falls in the remix category. Mochi Beats takes Ellie Goulding’s “Under The Sheets” and verses from Three 6 Mafia’s “Keep My Name Out Yo Mouth.” But the thing that makes it different is that he’s done all his own music production and made it a dance-worthy.

I’m digging the production and Ellie, but I’m a bit biased against Three 6 at times. They are a very hit or miss group for me. That being said, the first time they’re in the song at the start is great. Then at 1:32, I have trouble with that verse. It has nothing to do with Mochi Beat’s placement. It fits great. It’s just that that verse falls into the “miss” category for me with Three 6.

Of course that was only after my first listen. Now that I’ve heard it 4-5 times, I actually really like the whole thing, even Three 6 Mafia. It’s a really strong remix and blends a unique flavor of artists.

On a related note, I think it’s so coincidental how it was almost exactly a year ago, I posted the Chiddy Bang remix of Ellie’s “Under The Sheets.” Who woulda thought?

DJ Panic City presents: Kanye vs. Drake

Posted in mashup, mixtape on January 8th, 2011 by Kris.G

A solid hour+ of Kanye mashed with Drake. That’s right, it’s an entire mashup mixtape.

When Panic City first posted this, he said that if you like Drake or Kanye this should be right up your alley. Here’s the thing, I don’t really Drake or Kanye and yet this is still right up my alley. This is not the first time I’ve posted work of DJ Panic City, and he’s never let me down before so I gave this a chance.

And I’m happy I did. The combination of the two artists mixed with what seem to be interview clips make for quite the mixtape. Listen below and give some hearts on Hype Machine.

Mochi Beats – Letting Go Of Your Love

Posted in mashup on January 2nd, 2011 by Kris.G

O this is what I’ve been waiting for for. Mochi Beats went on a short break from his almost bi-weekly releases there when he was working on his EP but I’m so happy that we’ll be seeing tracks from him more frequently again. Once again, he does not disappoint. It’s another fun up-tempo mash that starts off quick and has a solid ending.

Don’t forget to check out his “Goodnight EP” that was just released on Dec 7 too!

To download this track, go to Mochi Beats’ Facebook page and “like” it. Then the song will be available for download on the Exclusives tab.

Norwegian Recycling – Mash It Up

Posted in mashup on December 15th, 2010 by Kris.G

Norwegian RecyclingNorwegian Recycling’s newest mashup “Mash It Up” is a pop-mashup that uses Cee Lo Green’s “Fuck You” as the instrumental. He used snippets of vocals from 11 other pop-songs to construct new lyrics. Most of these songs are relatively new and are charting as we speak while others are of a bit older nature.

Norwegian Recycling says that he wants the reconstructed lyrics to be about himself and his views on the mashup-culture.

Here are the sample used:
1. Cee Lo Green – Fuck You
2. Jay Sean feat. Sean Paul & Lil Jon – Do You Remember
3. Jay Sean feat. Nicki Minaj – 2012 (It Ain’t The End)
4. Kylie Minouge – Get Outta My Face
5. Britney Spears – Piece Of Me
6. Katy Perry – Teenage Dream
7. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance
8. David Guetta feat. Akon – Sexy Bitch
9. Sean Kingston – Beautiful Girls
10 .Kelly Rowland feat David Guetta – Commander
11. Gwen Stefani feat. Akon – The Sweet Escape
12. Flo Rida feat. David Guetta – Club Can’t Handle Me

Two for Tuesday | Mochi Beats

Posted in mashup, new release, special, two for tuesday on December 7th, 2010 by Kris.G

Today’s the day! BTV and Sunset in the Rearview have the exclusive release of Mochi Beats‘ brand new EP called Goodnight EP!

Mochi Beats has been working for some time on this release and I’m really digging it! It’s 22 minutes broken into 10 tracks and has the continuous mix included. Below are two of my favorite tracks off the EP.

You’ll see the one song is called Fraser’s Song. If you remember a month or two back, myself and SitR hosted an artwork contest for this new EP. Well Fraser won the contest (artwork above) and has been working with Mochi Beats on choosing a song to have incorporated into a mashup. Fraser ended up choosing Badd by the Ying Yang Twins ft. Mike Jones, and it was made into Fraser’s Song, hence the name…

Fraser’s talent with crayons doesn’t end with album art, though. He’s actually has worked on some other things including an unconventional animated documentary called “Vaseline & Pepper.” You can check it out here.

Get the full EP (Individual tracks and continuous mix) here!
