Friday is for… Covers | Stephen Colbert

Posted in comedy, cover, friday is for on April 22nd, 2011 by Kris.G

By this point if you haven’t heard Rebecca Blacks’ “Friday,” you’re one of the lucky ones. Well I can’t stand the song usually even with all the different versions I have heard. Well my mind was finally changed when Stephen Colbert performed it on Jimmy Fallon a couple weeks ago. There’s finally a version I don’t hate.

I’m come so close as to say I enjoy it… Uh oh.

But you know what? It is Friday! And in the words of Miss Black:

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

Stephen Colbert – Friday (ft. The Roots, Jimmy Fallon, and Taylor Hicks) (Rebecca Black Cover) [YSI]

Friday is for… Fun | HMO

Posted in comedy, friday is for on March 18th, 2011 by Kris.G

Damn, what a beautiful day! It’s warm, it’s sunny, and just overall a great day. It certainly gives the feeling that Summer is on the way. And so to celebrate the Summer being that much closer I decided to post LFO’s Summ- … O wait a second. Hold on here. This isn’t “Summer Girls” at all. I mean lyrically, they’re about on par with each other, but this is something very different. Yeah, that’s not about Summer at all…

For those of you who are just in the right age range to remember using Napster in it’s heyday, this may have been one of the “gems” you would have inevitably found in the cesspool of single track, mislabeled MP3s downloading over a 56k connection. Ah, the good ol’ days of music piracy.

HMO – Hummer Girls (LFO Parody) [YSI]

Friday is for… Remixes | Mochi Beats

Posted in friday is for, mashup, remix on March 11th, 2011 by Kris.G

Bridging The Verse is no stranger to the music of Mochi Beats. From posting quite a few of his mashups to co-hosting the contest for Mochi Beat’s last EP, I’ve heard my fair share of his work. Now, I get to hear something new. Although still staying true to his mashup roots, this definitely falls in the remix category. Mochi Beats takes Ellie Goulding’s “Under The Sheets” and verses from Three 6 Mafia’s “Keep My Name Out Yo Mouth.” But the thing that makes it different is that he’s done all his own music production and made it a dance-worthy.

I’m digging the production and Ellie, but I’m a bit biased against Three 6 at times. They are a very hit or miss group for me. That being said, the first time they’re in the song at the start is great. Then at 1:32, I have trouble with that verse. It has nothing to do with Mochi Beat’s placement. It fits great. It’s just that that verse falls into the “miss” category for me with Three 6.

Of course that was only after my first listen. Now that I’ve heard it 4-5 times, I actually really like the whole thing, even Three 6 Mafia. It’s a really strong remix and blends a unique flavor of artists.

On a related note, I think it’s so coincidental how it was almost exactly a year ago, I posted the Chiddy Bang remix of Ellie’s “Under The Sheets.” Who woulda thought?

Ellie Goulding ft. Three 6 Mafia – Keep Me Under The Sheets (Mochi Beats remix) [YSI]

Friday is for… Something Good | Mochi Beats

Posted in friday is for, special on February 11th, 2011 by Kris.G

Anyone who has been following my blog for any amount of time knows that one mashup artist I feature quite a bit is Mochi Beats. He’s always blending new songs together to create brand new songs. And now it seems as though his name is starting to become well known. He was recently to create a mashup for UNC Dance Marathon, a marathon where dancers are on their feet for 24 hours to raise money for the N.C. Children’s Hospital. His newest track “We R Night” featuring Waka, Diddy, and Kesha is currently available for streaming below. It will become available for download after the event next weekend on February 18. Check out Mochi Beats’ post about it here and go to the dance marathon site to donate.

We R The Night (Kesha + Diddy + Waka Flocka + Wale) by mochi beats

Now as a Penn State alumnus, I do need to make another plug here. The same weekend as UNC’s Dance Marathon, there is also Penn State’s Dance Marathon, simply called THON. THON is a 48 hours dance marathon where the dancers are on their feet the whole time with no sleep. The money raised goes to The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital to help the families of kids with cancer. Started in 1973 with a small group of dancers, THON is in its 39th year and has raised more than $69 million. Unfortunately there’s no cool Mochi Beats mashup to go with this marathon, but it’s still for a great cause. Check out THON’s site here to learn more and donate.

Friday is for… Something New | Talib Kweli

Posted in friday is for, new release on January 28th, 2011 by Kris.G

Talib Kweli is one of the best hip hop artists currently performing. Whether or not you like him is besides the point. He’s certainly not quite the made the mainstream rap culture but he’s amazing. He’s even gotten props from Jay-Z. In “Moment Of Clarity,” Jay says:

If skills sold
Truth be told
I’d probably be
Lyrically
Talib Kweli

Gutter Rainbows, on Tuesday and this is one of the bonus tracks featuring Iron Solomon and Jean Grae. Kweli blew me away once again with this album and this song specifically. I feel like if this was acappella, it’d still be just as interesting to listen to with Talib’s natural ebbs and flows.

Here’s a neat little anecdote about Talib Kweli. Five years ago, I had no idea who he was. I was just getting into hip hop and didn’t even know his name. As it turns out he was headlining a free concert series at Penn State and I was assigned to shoot his performance for the yearbook. That night as he came on stage, I got to be right up there with him. I had my camera and press pass and walked around the stage with Kweli getting closeups and just having a good time next to Talib. He really connected with the audience and it was a fun night.

Friday is for… Remixes | Chris Brown

Posted in friday is for, remix on January 14th, 2011 by Kris.G

As I was surfing the music blogosphere this past week, I came across a remix to Chris Brown’s song “Look At Me Now” that was posted by Confusion over at Pigeons and Planes. When I was reading the comments, I saw one said that the remix should be with Breezy, Busta, and Twista. Fuck Wayne.

Well in this case, your wish was my command. I chopped and screwed (chopped two mixes, screwed Wayned out of ‘em) Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” and inserted both Bus-a-bus and Twista into the same track. Talk about ridiculous flow! I’d like a word count for this track with these two guys together.

P.S. – Think Twista is going for the ironic hipster glasses or has really bad eyes?

Friday is for… Lyrics | Gyptian

Posted in friday is for on November 12th, 2010 by Kris.G

So now twice in the past month, two different friends have tried to figure out who sang this song by performing their own renditions of Gyptian’s syncopated “Soundglish” to me. For those of you who can’t figure that out, it’s sounds+English. Copyright me. Anyway, I just laughed at them and had no idea what they were talking about. Finally, I was enlightened.

So for any of you who have wondered what the hell he’s supposed to be saying, here are the lyrics. Go ahead and listen to the song and see if you can follow along with these nonsensical “words” of nothing-ness. All I know is that it’s something about holding a girl and being happy. That’s good enough for me:

Gyal, me wann fi hold
Yuh put me arms right around ya
Gyal, you give me the tightest
Hold me eva seen in my life

Gyal, me wann fi just squeeze
Yah put me ting right around ya
Gyal, you give me tightest
Hold me eva seen inna mi life, ohh

Me eye dem dry and me nuh care
Mi tek it anytime and anywhere
Inna de spare, so we nuh care
And as a woman I will be dere

Mi wanna gyal who go tek you away
Me want a gyal who cyan wine pon me
Wid it good and mek mi feel itt
Show me that you could girl

Gyal, me wann fi hold yuh
Put me arms right around ya
Gyal, you give me the tightest
Grip me eva seen inna my life

Gyal, me juss wann fi just holdd yah
Put me ting right around ya
Gyal you give me tightest
Hold me eva seen inna mi life

Life ah past by everbady like woo, woo, woo, woo
Jump on me back and she go boom, boom, boom, boom
Gime the mekka van aand the fat tun tun tun
Me na rampaz mi nozzle and get my boom boom

She de out a control
I move first cuz she want a man soon
She say no good woman and stil she good
Still me want it well good

Gyal, me wann fi hold yuhh
Put me arms right arounddd ya
Gyal, you give me the tightest
Hold me eva git inna my life

Gyal, me juss wann fi hold yuh
Put me arms right around ya
Gyal, you give me the tightest
Hold me eva seen inna my life

Life ah past by pon him and he guud, guud, guud, guud
Jump pan hi back and gu, gu, gu, guuh
In the maca van 95 boom, boom
Me na ramp when mi fi get mi goods

She de outta control
Ah, more fire she want in har soul
Ah, seta moan pan yuh and still she good
And still them have it well good

Gyal, me wann fi hold yuhh
Put me deeds right arounddd ya
Gyal, you give me the tightest
Hold me eva seen inna my life

Gyal, mi jus wann fi hold yuh
Put me arms right arounddd ya
Gyal, you give me the tightest
Hold me eva seen inna my life

Gyal, me wann fi just squeeze yahh
Put me ting right around ya
Gyal, you give me tightest
Hold me eva seen inna mi life, ohh

Me eye dem ah dry and me na care
Me tek it anytime and anywhere
Inna de spere, so we na care
And as a woman I will be there

Mi wanna gyal who go tek you away
Mi want a gyal who cyan wine pon me
Wid it good and mek mi feel itt
Show me that you could girl

Gyal, me wann fi hold yuh
Put me arms right around ya
Gyal, you give me the tightest
Grip me eva git inna my life

Gyal, me wann fi hold squeeze yahh
Put me ding right around ya
Gyal, you give me tightest
Hold me eva seen inna mi life, ohh

Ohh, ohh, yeah
Hold yah right ’round ya
My life right ’round ya
My life

Regardless of what he’s saying, the song does have a nice feel. It’s relaxing. Yes, it’s growing on me…

Friday is for… Covers | The Overtones

Posted in cover, friday is for on October 22nd, 2010 by Kris.G

I was stuck between this cover that I just recently found or an older remix. Guess the remix is gonna wait till another day. I’m not sure what it is but Cee-Lo knows how to get to the internet crowd. What I mean is that when “Crazy” first came out in 2006, it became the first number one single based on download sales alone. And now, he’s released “Fuck You” which blew up all over the internet and has been remixed, covered, and everything in between. So today, here’s one more cover for you. It’s by the A cappella group The Overtones. Check out some more of their stuff here and the video for this song is below. I love the subtle double-bird the lead singer flips at the camera at the end of the song.

For another great cover of this song from a female’s perspective check out Anjulie’s version here at Chrome Music.

Friday is for… Covers | Matisyahu

Posted in cover, friday is for on October 15th, 2010 by Kris.G

Make sure to watch the video below. The short interview with Matisyahu after his performance really sums this song up well. He talks about Kings of Leon and how much passion is their vocals. I think he’s exactly right and that’s why people have fallen head over heals for Kings of Leon. They feel them. I can’t say they’re my favorite band but I don’t mind them. Minus that they got very overplayed. And when I saw it was Matisyahu doing a cover, I couldn’t help but give it a chance. O yeah, and he starts beatboxing right around 2:45 so that kinda seals the deal for me.

This is another song from Billboard’s Mashup Mondays. Check it out there!

Friday is for… Remixes! | Metric

Posted in friday is for, remix on October 8th, 2010 by Kris.G

It’s a Friday. The weather is beautiful. As far I am concerned, it’s time to party. And you know what. Here’s something new for you to party to. Metric’s Canadian and JMP is Argentinian. Blended together, they are perfection. Maybe not perfection but a good a** time regardless. Thanks for sending me this remix JMP.

Make sure to check out more of his work on his Soundcloud.
