Barbara – Pursuit Of Happiness (Kid Cudi Cover)

Posted in cover on February 28th, 2010 by Kris.G

Found this cover online and having already fallen in love with the original, I figured I had to give this a listen and yes, I liked it just as much. What’s next? The Steve Aoki remix to this cover? That could be fantastic.

Here’s a write-up from TheMusicNinja:

The band is comprised of classically trained lead singer, Derek Stephens and hip-hop/electronic influenced producer Frank Eybsen.

The cover of Kid CuDi’s Pursuit of Happiness began as a joke after a long night of drinking, and is their introduction song to the world. They plan “leak” a couple more tracks our way from their upcoming EP so be sure to check back!

Bark Bark Disco – Song For The Lovers

Posted in new release on February 27th, 2010 by Kris.G

So what is it about these guys that made me post about em? Well, a few things: 1. They are a brand new band out of Germany. 2. They believe is free access to music so their first album is free from their website. 3. They seem to be fun. 4. And, o yeah, the video for this song is a really funny concept and it was the video that grabbed my attention more than anything.

Freestyle Friday | Crooked I

Posted in freestyle on February 26th, 2010 by Kris.G

“Fuck y’all. I’m goin’ pop.”

Gotta say, I only listened to this because I thought it would be terrible over top of Owl City’s “Fireflies.” I was happily surprised to find that I was wrong. Crooked I’s freestyle is fantastic here. He makes it fun yet the entire middle section is about how tough his life was as a kid getting shot at and everything.

When in Rome
Look what becoming Roman made us

I love how he karaokes it at the end, too, and then realizes he doesn’t know it so just scats with Owl City.

Spose – I’m Awesome

Posted in new release on February 25th, 2010 by Kris.G

No throwback this week. Instead, here is a fairly new release.

This guy Spose is a rapper out of Maine and as you’ll quickly tell from listening he’s white. But he’s no Eminem or Asher Roth. She overly self aware that he is white. I’m not sure I can say I like it but I like what he did with the lyrics. It’s extremely pop culture and in 20 years may mean nothing but for the time being, he put together flow that is very suburban white today.

Chiddy Bang – Opposite Of Adults

Posted in mixtape, new release on February 24th, 2010 by Kris.G

I was in a major toss-up for today between which of two songs to post that I had heard today for the first time each. One was serious hip hop song whereas the other was a very self aware hip hop song by a white guy out of Maine. I chose the former.

Chiddy Bang is a hip hop duo fresh out of Philly (by fresh, I mean they are college freshman) who had just released their first EP on Monday in the UK iTunes store (Not US yet). I gotta say I love what they brought to the table with this song. They heavily sampled MGMT’s “Kids” hence the name of their song and the witty puns didn’t end there. They’ve definitely got the production value and flow to make it to be successful in this hip hop market that is looking for something new. Weezy’s flow will soon get old and the Hova’s 9 piece band or Cudder’s jazzy flow will be the new wave.

They don’t end there either. These guy’s have sampled musical heavyweights including Radiohead and Tom Waits. Look into em. They are changing the face of hip hop.

Can I please get a little bit of knowledge
Somebody tell Roth that I don’t love college
‘Cause the real world’s kinda like Real World
And it’s drama so you watch so you are Svetlana and I’m just a rhymer

Chiddy Bang – Opposite Of Adults [zshare]

P.S. – Don’t expect a throwback tomorrow. It’ll probably be the other song I was talking about earlier…

Two for Tuesday | Marilyn Manson

Posted in two for tuesday on February 23rd, 2010 by Kris.G

This is much more than a hip hop, dance or indie blog. It truly is a blog that posts whatever I’m feeling that day. Today, I’m feeling a bit of Manson. I know, I know. “He’s such a freak.” No he’s not. He’s incredibly smart.

I believe Manson’s defining moment for me was his response in “Bowling for Columbine” when Michael Moore asked him, “If you were to talk directly to the kids at Columbine or the people in that community, what would you say to them if they were here right now?”

Manson responded, “I wouldn’t say a single word to them I would listen to what they have to say, and that’s what no one did.”

In many ways, Manson is a hard rock Lady Gaga. He is a performance artist. His music is about your reaction to it, not the music itself.

Both of today’s songs are from Manson’s 2003 album “The Golden Age of Grotesque” are two of my favorites of his.

Barenaked Ladies – Who Needs Sleep

Posted in Uncategorized on February 22nd, 2010 by Kris.G

I’ve been exhausted since this weekend and all day today yet I had the lyrics to this song stuck in my head.

(Is that irony? Maybe only by Alannis’ standards…)

It’s not one of their highest rated singles but I still enjoy it as with most of this album. Another notable song from Stunt is “Alcohol.” Just something fun to listen to to.

THON Sunday

Posted in special on February 21st, 2010 by Kris.G

Today is the conclusion of THON 2010 at 4PM. Three hours before the event ends is Family Hour. During this time, we celebrate all the THON families who THON is supporting. There is also a point when we remember all those THON children who have passed with a slide show. It is by far the most moving part of THON. The song that accompanies this slide show is Alabama’s “Angels Among Us.” Needless to say it is ever so difficult to find a dry face in the arena.

Freestyle THON Friday!

Posted in special on February 19th, 2010 by Kris.G

Beginning today, Penn State is having their annual 46 hour dance marathon, lovingly called Thon. It is the world’s largest student-run philanthropy raising money for the Four  Diamonds Fund to aid families with kids with cancer.

Last year, Thon raised nearly $7.5 million.

“In 1973, a small group of dedicated Penn State students held our first Dance Marathon. That year, 34 dancers participated and raised $2,000. Since then, THON’s presence in the Penn State community has grown exponentially. THON now has 15,000 student volunteers, 700 dancers, and has raised more than $61 million, benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children’s Hospital.

THON is now a year-long effort that raises funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. With the support of students from all across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and THON Alumni all around the world, we continue to make great strides towards finding a cure for all childhood cancers!”

Please visit their website to get all the information about THON, a great cause.

So here’s a song about that hope that all participating in THON hold. But because this is my blog, this isn’t exactly a song that THON would think of to use first so here’s some Modern Mouse for you.
